Parkway Student Activities Club
New Look!
Greetings! Please pardon our
dust while we are in the process of updating our website to be
more user-friendly. Thanks.
Science Club
Ms. Vincent
The High School Science Club at Parkway Academy
has as its primary goal fostering an appreciation for science and technology
among young students, along with a reflection on science responsibility to
promote social justice by respecting ethical values. The club aims at
reaching young students in Parkway Academy to promote a reflection on the
ethical boundaries of science and technology.
Spanish Club
Ms. Estevez
Spanish clubs open up a world of
possibilities for cultural exploration and
entertainment.
Use your high
school
Spanish club as a way to plan fun activities for the whole school. Invoke
the beauty and history of the Spanish-speaking
cultures
of the world when you plan fun activities for the club
Student Government
What is it?
A student government usually includes three or
four elected students from each classroom or grade. These students are
called representatives.
The election process works sort of like the US
Congress. Usually, students nominate other students whom they think would
make good leaders.
Then, the school holds an election in which you
and your classmates vote for these candidates. Those with the most votes
become members of the student government.
The representatives choose officers from their
group. Officers usually are president, vice president, secretary, and
treasurer.
The entire group meets every week or two with
their advisor and talks about things that affect the school.
Student Government
is designed to provide leadership roles for students who are actively
involved in school and extra-curriculum activities. Students who would like
to recommend and suggest new ideas and discuss concerns with the staff and
fellow students.
Some of the goals being student government
representatives are to:
Promote school spirit. One of the main jobs of
the student government is to promote school spirit. There are lots of ways
to do this, unique ideas including:
-
Dances;
-
Carnivals;
-
Games;
-
Pep rallies;
-
Assemblies.
Show leadership. All Student government
members have to be good leaders and role models. Some student government
representatives have special
leadership activities.
These activities show the members how to solve
problems and respect each other. They also can learn to help their
communities by volunteering or doing
service projects.
Promote awareness of important issues. Student
government representatives can help students understand and discuss things
in the world or in school that affect everyone. One way they do this is by
bringing in
outside speakers.
Outside
Speakers Bring New Ideas
Student government representatives often plan
assemblies or invite outside speakers. These speakers can talk to students
about anything from homework to homelessness.
Speakers or assemblies can make students aware of
social issues that they might not have a chance to learn about in class.
They also can get people talking about things
that are going on in school.
Fundraise. Unfortunately almost all of these
activities cost money. It can be expensive to have a dance or invite a
speaker. So student government representatives also have to spend time
raising money (fundraising).

Speech and Debate
Ms. Lundi
We are currently
recruiting students. We will compete against other schools (public and
private local schools.) Competitions are made up of 3 rounds with 3
different judges. The students compete in reading categories where
expression and clarity are judged. They also compete in memorized categories
(oratory and declamation) which are political speeches and interpretations
(such as acting), which can be humorous and dramatic. On the debate side,
there is group discussion, which is a round table debate and extemporaneous.
This is persuasive speaking but done on the site. The students prepare and
practice individual. This club is academic in nature and deeply competitive.
Please see Mrs. T.
Williams for more information and participation.
